Major triad based 7th chords are:
- maj7 (major+M7) exists i.e. on I and IV degree of major
- 7 (major+m7) exists on V degree of major and minor (it's dominant seventh chord)

Minor triad based 7th chords are:
- mmaj7 (minor+M7) exists i.e. on I degree of minor
- m7 (minor+m7) exists i.e. on II, III, VI degree of major and on IV degree of minor

Some 7th chords are based on diminished or augmented triads:
- m7b5 or half diminished (dim+m7) exists i.e.. on II degree of minor and VII degree of major
- dim7 or diminished seventh chord (dim+d7) exists on VII degree of harmonic minor
- maj7#5 (aug+M7)exists on III degree of harmonic minor
