Three triplet eighth notes (quavers) are equal in duration to one quarter note.
Triplets are typically notated with a number 3 above or below the beam if the notes are beamed together.

Three triplet quarter notes are equal in duration to one half note.
Triplets are notated with a bracket and a number above or below.
