Topic outline

  • Welcome!

With this course you can practise:

    • Numbers and names of intervals

Recommended to study before this course:

    • Notes 1A

  • Numbers of intervals

An interval is the difference in pitch between two notes. The numbering starts at 1.

The numbering does not depend on the location of notes (low or high) on the staff or accidentals.

For example all intervals below are thirds (3).

  • Names of intervals

Names of intervals from prime to octave (1-8)

  • Sound quality of intervals

Intervals can be described or classified according to sound quality.

    • Consonance is associated with sweetness, pleasantness, and acceptability
    • Dissonance is associated with harshness, unpleasantness, or unacceptability.

Listen to the example below (including seconds, thirds, sixths and sevenths).
