The most important chord degrees are
- I degree, do-mi-so, 1st degree chord (tonic chord). Almost all pieces ends with tonic chord
- V degree, so-ti-re, 5th degree (dominant chord) is often before tonic.
Both are major triads.

Because both I and V are major triads, the chord symbol is the root note.
For example in C major
- I degree is C
- V degree is G
In G major
- I degree is G
- V degree is D

In minor key
- I degree is minor triad
- V degree is major triad
For example in A minor:
- I degree is Am
- V degree is E (E major, not E minor)
In D minor:
- I degree is Dm
- V degree is A
